DeKalb Schools Track: Henderson, Chamblee Win Middle School Titles

Four records fall as Henderson, Chamblee win track championships.

The Henderson boys and Chamblee girls claimed the 2012 DeKalb County Middle School track titles on Monday at Panthersville Stadium in a pair of close finishes in the overall standings as four meet records fell despite the rainy weather.

Chamblee claimed the girls’ title by edging out Peachtree 69.50 to 66 with Henderson a close third with 63 points. It was Chamblee’s third middle school championship in the past four seasons having won in 2009 and 2010.

Chamblee’s overall depth provided the winning margin as the team scored points in all 11 events including double gold medal winner Venida Fagan. Fagan won the 200 meter dash in a time of 25.74 and then took the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.63.

Peachtree picked up three gold medals by the 400 meter relay team ‘A’ with a time of 52.37, Lauren Jackson in the 800 meter run (2:29.64) and Ansley Heavern in the 1600 meter run (5:37.66). Peachtree missed out on points in the 100 meter dash, 1600 meter relay and the 800 meter spring medley.

Henderson’s third place finish was paced by Ly’ric Bolden’s victory in the long jump (15 feet, 11 inches).

Columbia finished fourth over in the girls’ standings with 49 points led by wins in the 100 meter dash by Alexandra Andrews (12.73) and the sprint medley team ‘B’ with a meet record of 1:53.74. It broke the record of 1:54.15 set by Columbia in 2011.

A pair of jumpers broke the girls’ meet record of 37 feet, 4.5 inches formerly held by Tanycia Wooden of Chapel Hill (2008) in the shot put. Cedar Grove’s Jazmine Johnson won the event with a new record of 39 feet, 8 inches while Stephenson’s Kimberly Molden took second with jump of 3 feet, 10 inches.

Salem finished fifth in the overall standings behind a win in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 4:18.98.

Henderson claimed its second consecutive boys’ track championship in a tight 62-60 battle with Stephenson.

The Henderson championship repeat was fueled by gold medals from Denzel Harper in the long jump (19 feet, 10.5 inches) and Davis Stockwell in the 1600 meter run (4:55.56).

Stephenson picked up one gold medal in the 800 meter run as Brandon Hines won in a time of 2:07.57 and three silver medals coming in the 400 meter relay, 1600 meter relay and the 800 sprint medley relay almost pulled out the victory.

Chapel Hill was third in the team standing with 47 points behind gold medals in the 400 meter relay (45.38) and a record setting performance of 1:39.28 in the 800 sprint medley breaking Sequoyah’s record of 1:41.78 set in 2011.

Freedom was fourth overall with 37 points as the A relay team won gold in the 1600 meter relay in a time of 3:42.83.

Cedar Grove was fifth with 36 points as record setting Korey Banks won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Banks broke the 200 meter dash record of 23.21 set by Byron Walker of Champion in the 2008 meet with a time of 23.19 and won the 100 in 11.52.

Other gold medal winners include Myles Donaldson of Bethune in the 400 meter dash (52.65) and Javier Lee of Druid Hills in the shot put (44 feet, 10.5 inches).
