DeKalb Schools Soccer: Tucker Tigers Play Today

Eight DeKalb soccer teams open state playoffs this week.

The 2012 GHSA State Soccer Playoffs open first round play on Tuesday with eight schools representing the DeKalb County School District competing for a berth in the second round.

Three of the five boys’ teams open up play on Tuesday with only Class AAAA No. 6 ranked Tucker playing at home. The Tigers (13-4-1) play host to South Paulding (11-5-1) in a game set for a 7:30 p.m. start at Hallford Stadium in Clarkston.

Tucker is led by senior forward Solomon Roberts who has 15 goals (tied for 6th in county) and six assists and goaltender Steven Duffy who is allowing only 1.14 goals per game which is tied for fourth in the county goaltending statistics.

In other Class AAAA action No. 7 ranked Lakeside (12-3-1) travels to Alexander (11-4-2) for their first round match at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vikings are led by senior middle fielder Austin Smith (16 goals) and senior forward Nick Harris (15 goals) on offense. Lakeside has a pair of goaltenders that rank first and second in the county stats in junior Susjed Garcia (0.63 goals allowed) and sophomore Jonathan Goldsmith (0.69 goals allowed).

Stephenson (11-4-2) travels to No. 10 ranked Tift County (12-1-2) in the opening round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Sophomore forward Emmanuel Manning ranks fourth in the county in goals scored with 20 on the season for the Jaguars.

All three DeKalb girls’ teams are set for Class AAAA play on Wednesday (May 2) along with the Chamblee boys’ team.

The Chamblee Lady Bulldogs (13-2-0) host North Paulding (16-2-0) at 5:30 p.m. at North DeKalb. Chamblee goaltender Jamie Whitacre ranks third in the county at 0.65 goals allowed while senior forward Nicole Ruffin ranks second in goals scored with 30 on the season while senior Lydia Morrow leads the county with 16 assists while connecting 11 goals of her own.

Dunwoody (11-7-0) travels to take on No. 4 ranked Pope (17-1-0) at 5:55 p.m. on Wednesday. The Lady Wildcats are led by junior forward Emily Strahan who has scored 25 goals this season and is tied for third in the county and sophomore Avery Woods is tied for second with 15 assists. Senior goaltender Megan Grove ranks sixth in the county in goals allowed with 2.39 and sophomore teammate Haley Johnson is right behind at 2.67.

The Lakeside Lady Vikings (12-3-1) travel to Kell (13-4-1) to open a double-header at 6 p.m. with the No. 8 ranked Kell Longhorns (15-3-0) against the Chamblee Bulldogs (12-5-0) following at 8 p.m.

Lakeside has the top two goaltenders in the county in junior Monica Villarreal (0.60 goals allowed) and Ashlee Graham (0.27 goals allowed). Senior Summer Bader leads the Lady Vikings on offense with 12 goals and 13 assists.

The Bulldogs are powered by senior middle fielders Erik Ramirez, 11 goals and a county leading 22 assists on the season, and Devin Pope with 11 goals and 11 assists. Senior goaltender Heyelom Gebree is sitting at the No. 5 spot in the goaltending stats for DeKalb County with a 1.28 goals allowed average.

The final game of the week involves the Druid Hills Red Devils (8-5-2) traveling to take on Columbus (14-4-0) at 6 p.m. on Thursday (May 3) at Columbus State University. Junior John Toulme is third in the county with a .077 goals allowed average in the net for Druid Hills.
