The Class AAAAA No. 7 ranked Martin Luther King Jr. Lions open their
season on Thursday night in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Hallford Stadium
against the South Gwinnett Comets (0-1).

WSB-TV and PlayOn Sports picked up the game for their Thursday Night Football package to be televised on Channel 2.2 (Comcast 248 in Atlanta).

South Gwinnett won at home a year ago in a 44-41 shootout featuring a pair of high octane offenses. M.L. King’s Jonquel Dawson passed for a record setting 486 yards in the season opener a year ago and went on to set the season and career passing marks in DeKalb County and returns to add to that career total this fall.

Dawson passed for 3,611 yards last season and moved on top of the career passing list with 5,383 yards. South Gwinnett lost its season opener 45-13 to current No. 1 ranked
Lowndes.

Class AAAAA No. 6 ranked Stephenson (1-0) and Class AAA No. 6 ranked Cedar Grove are both coming off season opening victories as they meet up on Friday in a 7:30 p.m. game at Hallford Stadium.

Stephenson used a tough defense and big plays from running back Mike Davis and punt returner Demarcus Sweat to rally past Parkview 14-3.

Cedar Grove led by exciting junior quarterback Jonathan McCrary (3,343 yards passing a year ago) jumped out early on Veterans on the way to a 40-19 victory at Panthersville this past weekend.

Another classic rivalry clash between Region 6-AAAA contenders Tucker and Marist is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. as the Tigers host at Adams Stadium. The No. 1 ranked Tucker squad defeated county rival Southwest DeKalb 18-7 on television last Thursday night.

No. 9 ranked Marist (1-0) is coming off a 44-6 beating of Douglass last
Friday night.
