Week 8 Review

The No. 1 ranked Tucker Tigers showed Mays why they are No. 1 in the state in Class AAAA with a at Adams Stadium on Friday night. The Tigers and Raiders both entered the game at 5-0 on the season and atop the Region 6-AAAA standings.

Mays came out throwing and moved to the Tiger 32 before Tucker’s defense stood up and forced a punt which pinned Tucker at its own one-yard line. The Tigers calmly drove 99 yards in 11 plays and scored on a 25-yard reverse pass from Dominick Sanders to . Minor also ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 Tucker lead with 4:11 to play in the first quarter.

Tucker quarterback carried four times for 33 yards in an 11-play, 58-yard drive late in the first half to set up a four-yard run around left end by Dallas Rivers for a 14-0 lead.

The Tiger defense which held Mays to a minus 20 yards in the second quarter forced the Raiders into a punting situation and then forced the punter to pull the ball down and try to run to keep it from getting blocked only to give Tucker the ball at the Mays 17-yard line. Williams finished the short drive with a one-yard sneak into the end zone to give the Tigers a 21-0 lead heading to the half.

Tucker blew open the game to start the second half as Dallas Rivers, who had 10 carries for 103 yards went 57 yards on the second play of the third quarter and then Williams hooked up with Minor on a 51-yard touchdown pass as the lead ballooned to 36-0 with 3:40 left in the third period.

Mays struck for its only touchdown on the first play of their next possession as Tre Jones connected with Johnathan Williams for a 72-yard pass play, but Tucker answered with Minor going 93 yards on the ensuing kickoff for a 43-7 advantage.

Tucker’s Terrell Simmons closed out the scoring with an exciting 75-yard interception return as he broke a pair of tackles along the Tucker sideline and spun away for the final 30 yards and the score. Steven Duffy added his fourth extra point kick of the night for the final of 50-7.

The No. 5 ranked Martin Luther King Jr. Lions remained undefeated by
taking a 49-42 shootout victory over Luella on the road to improve to 3-0 in Region 2-AAAAA action. Carnell Boyd hauled in a touchdown pass from Jonquell Dawson with just over two minutes to play for the winning score.

The No. 4 ranked Stephenson Jaguars (6-0) improved to 3-0 in Region 2-AAAAA as well with a 34-6 victory over Newton (3-3) on the road in Covington. The Jaguars jumped out to a 21-0 lead and cruised to the win.

The Cedar Grove Saints (5-2) improved to 4-0 in Region 5B-AAA with a convincing 40-0 victory over Arabia Mountain (2-4) at Panthersville on Friday night. Johnathan McCrary led the Saints as he accounted for five touchdowns (4 passing, 1 running) in the victory.
