Martin Luther King Jr., Stephenson and Tucker all kept their undefeated records intact this past weekend as they took high school football region victories. The No. 5 ranked M.L. King Lions rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit with 26 unanswered points to defeat Region 2-AAAAA foe Newton 26-10 at Panthersville on Friday night.

Record setting quarterback Jonquel Dawson passed for 200 yards and three
touchdowns to rally the Lions. Dawson connected with Joshua Stanford for 83 yards for one touchdown and Stanford caught one more for a score in the Lions’ comeback. The Lions improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Region 2-AAAA to keep pace with Stephenson and Newnan.

The No. 4 ranked Stephenson Jaguars also improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Region 2-AAAAA as the defense forced three turnovers in a 46-0 shutout of Langston Hughes. Demarcus Sweat excited the Jaguars with a 55-yard punt return while Brandon Washington, Mike Davis and Pernell Whitehead combined for five rushing touchdowns as the Jaguars rolled.

The Class AAAA No. 1 ranked Tucker Tigers improved to 7-0 overall and 7-0 in Region 6-AAAA with a relatively easy 37-6 victory over the Miller Grove Wolverines (4-3). Yusuf Minor and Dallas Rivers had a pair of touchdowns each including runs of 36 yards by Minor and 42 yards by Rivers to lead the big Tiger rushing attack. Jordan Landry also tacked on a nine-yard run for a score.

The Region 5B-AAA race got tighter as Woodward Academy rallied in the final minute for a 27-24 victory over the Cedar Grove Saints to create a three-way tie between Woodward, Cedar Grove and Columbia. All three teams have one loss in region play.
