DeKalb Schools Football: July 18 Is Media Day

Media and fans ready to get a jump on the 2012 high school football season can do so at the annual DeKalb County Football Media Day set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18 at James Hallford Stadium in Clarkston.

Preseason practice begins a week earlier this year as teams can hit the field on July 25.

New head coaches will be making their appearance at Media Day as Chamblee
(Allen Johnson), Columbia (David Edwards), Lakeside (Mike Rozier), Redan (Terrance Amos) and Tucker () will introduce their new top men along with Decatur (Brad Waggoner).

Media Day as usual will feature all 19 DeKalb County School District programs along with Decatur, Marist and St. Pius X. Coaches from each school will bring some of their top seniors and athletes to the event.

Each coach will introduce his players and give a brief outlook on the upcoming season which features a major reconstruction of their regions with the addition of Class AAAAAA.

Druid Hills has jumped from Class AAA to the new Class AAAAAA due in part to the addition of students from the recently closed Avondale High School to become the county’s largest high school heading into the 2012 season. Druid Hills joins Alcovy, Morrow, Rockdale County, Newton, Lovejoy and Morrow in Region 2-AAAAAA.

Perennial Class AAAAA powers Stephenson and Martin Luther King Jr. are joined in Region 6-AAAAA by traditional Class AAAA powers Tucker and Southwest DeKalb along with fellow DeKalb entries Dunwoody, Miller Grove, Arabia Mountain, Clarkston, Lakeside and Miller Grove. North Atlanta and Mays will also compete in Region 6.

Region 6-AAAA still has some familiar names as Chamblee, Lithonia, Marist, Redan and Carver-Atlanta are holdover from the past several years of competition. Newcomers to 6-AAAA include DeKalb entries Columbia and Stone Mountain along with Banneker, Grady, South Atlanta, Therrell and Washington.

Cross Keys is moving from AA to AAA along with Decatur and Blessed Trinity as the trio joins former Region 5-AAA foes from DeKalb in Cedar Grove, McNair and Towers along with St. Pius X and Woodward Academy in Region 6-AAA.
