DeKalb Schools Cross Country: Stone Mountain, Cross Keys Repeat Winners

Tucker finished third with 88 points led by senior Sean Purcell's seventh place finish in a time of 20:15.06.

The DeKalb County cross country races moved to Arabia Mountain in week two with similar results as Stone Mountain and Cross Keys repeated as winners in the two boys’ races on Tuesday (Sept. 6).

Stone Mountain junior Nahome Abera was a bit off his county best time of 17:33.98 he ran on the opening week at Druid Hills Middle, but still clocked an 18:14.90 in leading the Pirates to a 27-99 victory over Stephenson in the first race at the slower Arabia Mountain course.

Abera’s junior teammates Abel Abay (19:40.00) and Roberto Madrigal (19:42.00) were fourth and fifth, respectively while Abdullahi Ahmed (20:32.00) was seventh and senior Clauvis Chishibanji was 10th in 21:09.00.

Southwest DeKalb had four runners in the Top 10, but did not field a fifthrunner to qualify in the team standings. Junior Jacques Williams (18:15.00) and senior Malik Wheeler (18:36.00) were second and third, respectively, to lead the four Panthers in the Top 10. Juniors Brandon Dorsey (20:38.00) and Christopher Morris (20:52.00) were eight and ninth, respectively, to round out the Panther runners.

Stephenson’s Dominique King was 15th in a time of 23:53.00 to lead the Jaguar runners to the second place finish. The team won the first girls’ race of the day 39-46 over Cedar Grove by placing three runners in the top seven finishers. Senior Jessica McCall led a trio of Lady Jaguars with a fifth place finish in 29:19.88 followed by sophomore Brittany Davis (29:20.54) and freshman Leilani Smith (31:21.26).

Southwest DeKalb’s Greciana Cooper won her second consecutive competition of the season clocking a 21:14.08 to take individual honors in the race. Cooper ran a county best time of 19:59.36 in the opening week at Druid Hills Middle.

Cedar Grove junior Christian Pryor was second in 24:38.42 to lead the Lady Saints to the second place team finish.

Cross Keys took the first four places in the second race at Arabia Mountain as junior Antonio Ramos won his second race of the season in a time of 19:43.84. Senior Franky Guzman (19:46.51), sophomores Miguel Hernandez (19:51.40) and Juan Garcia (19:51.93) followed Ramos across the finish line in order.

The Indians big finish helped them to an 18-72 win over Lakeside.

Miller Grove junior Rahim Aponte finished fifth in 19:58.03 and Lakeside sophomore Will Smith-Purcell was sixth in 19:59.11 to lead the Vikings.

Lakeside squeezed by Cross Keys 34-37 in the girls’ second race at Arabia Mountain led by freshman Grace Clark’s first place finish in 22:20.30. Two more Lakeside freshmen finished in the top eight as Bea Frankel was sixth in 25:34.82 and Sage Bernard eighth in 25:40.38. Cross Keys was led by junior Yesenia Velazquez who took second in 25:00.12 and freshman Patricia Alvarez in third with a time of 25:00.40.
