DeKalb Schools Athletics: Lakeside Captures 2012 All-Sports Award

Tucker picked up its 20th Top 5 finish with 248 points behind its Class AAAA state title in football.

The DeKalb County High School All-Sports Award returned to Lakeside in 2012 for the first time since 2008.

Lakeside won nine DeKalb County All-Sports Awards from 1996 to 2004, but had only won the 2008 crown as the best all-around athletic program in DeKalb over the past seven athletic school years.

Lakeside finished second to Dunwoody twice (2009, 2010) in that seven year span as the Dunwoody program won four out of the seven, including three in a row from 2009 to 2011, to tie Lakeside with 12 All-Sports titles in the 31 year history (1982-2012) of the award.

The 2011-12 athletic year was different as Lakeside won the DeKalb County
gymnastics, boys’ and girls’ cross country, boys’ and girls’ swimming and girls’ golf championships to climb past second place Dunwoody by 33.5 points (317.5 to 284). The win gives Lakeside a DeKalb County leading 13th All-Sports Awards followed by Dunwoody with 12, Redan 3, Southwest DeKalb 2 and Tucker 1.

Chamblee came up just shy of second with 279 points for the program’s 14th Top 5 finish while Southwest DeKalb fell from second to fourth with 259 points for the program’s 19th Top 5 finish and Tucker picked up its 20th Top 5 finish with 248 points behind its Class AAAA state title in football.

Columbia, boys and girls’ state titles in basketball, tops the second five in the Top 10 with 238.5 points followed by Druid Hills (226), Arabia Mountain (221.5), Miller Grove (213.5), boy’s and girls’ state titles in basketball, and Stephenson (204).

Lakeside’s 33.5 point advantage was the seventh largest winning margin in the 31 years of the award giving the program six of the top seven largest winning margins, including the 2002 margin of 59.5 that tops the list. In contrast, the 317.5 total by Lakeside is the fourth largest total by a program over the same time period behind Dunwoody’s all-time high of 357.5 in 2010.
