DeKalb Middle Schools Football: Recap and Preview

Looking back on week four, and forward to week five.

DeKalb County Middle School Football moves into the fifth week of play on Saturday with the undefeated Bethune Lions (3-0, 1-0) taking on the undefeated Champion Chargers (3-0, 1-0) for the lead in the Region 1 standings. The pair meets at Avondale Stadium for a 10:30 a.m. kickoff to see who takes control of Region 1.

The Lions come into the game on a 19 game regular season winning streak following a 50-20 win over the Tucker Tigers (1-3, 1-1) last week. Champion had a bye-week after shutting out Sequoyah (0-4, 0-2) 58-0 in Week 3 action.

Region 2 also has a game with the winner coming out with the lead in the standings as Cedar Grove (3-1, 2-0) takes on Salem (3-1, 2-0) in a 10:30 a.m. meeting at Hallford Stadium on Saturday.

Cedar Grove is coming off its big 14-8 win over defending champion Stephenson. Salem won a high scoring affair with Renfroe by a 34-28 score to set up the crucial region meeting between the two teams.

Columbia (2-1, 1-0) takes on Lithonia (2-1, 0-1) in another big Region 3 contest at 9 a.m. at Avondale Stadium. Columbia won its first region game 32-0 over McNair (0-4, 0-2) last week and looks to set up a game against Peachtree for the lead in Region 3 in Week 6.

Lithonia is coming off a bye-week following a tough 7-0 loss to Peachtree in Week 3. Lithonia needs to knock off Columbia to get into position for a playoff spot.

Stephenson (2-1, 0-1) takes on Chamblee (1-2, 0-1) in a game both teams want to get back into playoff contention. Stephenson lost a tough 14-8 decision to Cedar Grove in Week 4 that ended their 11 game win streak. Chamblee is coming off a bye and is coming off a 26-6 loss to Region 2 co-leader Salem in Week 3.

Cedar Grove knocked off defending champion Stephenson 14-8 last Saturday at Hallford Stadium to move atop the Region 2 middle school football standings. Cedar Grove (3-1, 2-0) ended Stephenson’s (2-1, 0-1) 11-game win streak that including a perfect 9-0 record in 2011 on the way to the DeKalb County Middle School Championship. The win also put Cedar Grove into a tie with Salem (3-1, 2-0) at the top of the Region 2 standings following Salem’s 34-28 win Renfroe (1-3, 0-2).

Bethune (3-0, 1-0) ran its regular season winning streak to 19 in a row with a 50-20 Region 1 win over Tucker (1-3, 1-1) behind the five touchdown performance of Timothy Boyd. Boyd rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns while adding an 80 yard kickoff return and a 40 yard punt return for touchdowns.

The offensive line of Dontavius Sellars, Vertavious Williams, Jejuan Long, Devante Wyatt (2 pancake blocks) and Jarvis Oglesby paved the way for Boyd’s rushing performance. Oglesby also had six solo tackles, one pass deflection and a quarterback sack on defense.

Chapel Hill got back into playoff contention in Region 4 play with a 30-15 win over defending region champion Druid Hills. Carl White led Chapel Hill (2-2, 1-1) with 120 yards, one touchdown and three two-point conversions in the victory over Druid Hills (0-3, 0-2).

Miller Grove’s Brandon Booker intercepted a pass with time running out to seal the Wolverine’s 8-6 win over Freedon (2-2, 0-2) to move to the lead in Region 4 with a 3-1 record overall and 2-0 in region action.

Franklin Smith hauled in a 25-yard pass from Delrick Franklin in the first quarter for the lone Wolverine score of the game. The Wolverine forced three turnovers in the game including Booker’s interception and another key forced fumble by Wildarius Robinson late in the game. Agazi Kahsai added three quarterback sacks for the Miller Grove defense.

Peachtree remained undefeated on the season with a 14-0 Region 3 victory over Redan. Peachtree (4-0, 2-0) is currently leading the Region 3 standings followed by Columbia (2-1, 1-0), a 32-0 winner over McNair (0-4, 0-2).
