DeKalb County Wrestling Championships Start Friday

Returning champions include Tucker junior Romello Swain.

The 2012 William S. Venable DeKalb County Wrestling Championships begin at 5 p.m. on Friday at Miller Grove High School.

The tournament will consist of wrestlers from 21 schools (19 DeKalb County, St. Pius X, Marist and Decatur) and the championship rounds will be on Saturday with wrestle backs beginning at 1 p.m.

Region 2-AAAAA champion Stephenson (20-2) along with Region 6-AAAA champion Marist (18-8) and runner-up Southwest DeKalb (10-9) and Region 5-AAA runner-up McNair (20-2) headline the teams competing.

Stephenson is led by a pair of sophomore wrestlers who were undefeated heading into the recent state duals in Stephen Wylie (24-0) in the 152 pound division and Darian Perry (23-0) in the160 pound division. Wylie won the 152 division in 2011 and returns to defend his title.

Marist freshman Kenneth Brinson (195 division) is coming off a championship in the prestigious Prep Slam Wrestling Tournament held at Holy Innocents. The tournament had 40 teams from 11 states.

Southwest DeKalb’s contingent is led by heavyweight (285) Gabe Echols, a senior, who was undefeated at 15-0 heading to state. Echols is also the defending 285 pound division champion.

McNair has been led this season by seniors Kevin Barner (16-0) and D.J. Jackson (15-0) and junior Khalil Williams (15-0).  Barner has a 12-0 record in the 285 pound division while Jackson is 11-0 in the 220 pound division. Williams is 9-0 at 120 and 6-0 at 126.

The tournament will feature 14 wrestlers with 20 or more wins led by Miller Grove junior Wesley Williams who is 30-4 in the 195 pound division.

Southwest DeKalb is the defending champions entering the 2012 championships having defeated Tucker 207-146.5 for the 2011 title.

Other returning individual champions include Tucker junior Romello Swain (103, now in 106 at 9-2) and Redan senior James Philpot (171, but in 182 this year at 25-3).
