DeKalb County Sets Record With 132 Football Signees

At least five more are expected to sign in the next couple of days.

The 2012 National Football Signing Day was a banner one for DeKalb County Schools as a record 132 football players signed athletic scholarships throughout the school district.

It bested the 2010 mark of 120 signing on the opening day and was one away from the best overall mark of 133 set that same year. At least five more are expected to sign in the next couple of days that would put this year over that high in 2010.

It marks the third year in a row for DeKalb to eclipse the century mark in signees set to further their academic and athletic careers after high school.

Stephenson once again led the way in players signing their national letters on Wednesday as 25 put their name to paper. Eleven of the 25 signed with Football Bowl Championship (formerly Division 1-A) schools.

Martin Luther King Jr. High School was next with a record 22 signees of which seven signed with FBS schools.

Columbia High School followed with 17 signees including four with FBS schools and Cedar Grove finishes out the double figures with 13 (1 FBS signee).

(2 FBS) followed by Miller Grove and Dunwoody with eight each.

All in all 31 players signed with FBS teams including 15 in the Southeastern Conference (8 colleges), six in the Atlantic Coast Conference (four colleges).

Sixty-six colleges are represented in the 132 signees including ones as far away as California (College of the Sequoias) and as far north as Ohio (Ohio University and Miami of Ohio) and Delaware (Delaware State).
