Basketball: Tucker Plays in Clarkston Friday

Both teams are trying to lock up sub-region top seeds for the regional tournament.

Tucker travels to Clarkston on Friday with both its girls’ and boys’ teams ranked and trying to lock up sub-region top seeds for the region tournament.

The Lady Tigers (19-3, 8-0) are ranked No. 1 in both polls heading into the game with a two-game lead over Stephenson in sub-region play. The Tigers are No. 6 in the AJC and No. 5 in the MaxPrep poll with a 14-7 overall record and 6-2 in sub-region play which is good for a tie for first with Stephenson and North Atlanta.

The Stephenson-North Atlanta boys’ tussle at Stephenson pits the ninth and 10th ranked teams in the MaxPrep Poll with first place on the line. The No. 10 Jaguars (12-11, 6-2) look to take advantage of the home court edge against the No. 9 Warriors (14-9, 6-2).

The Stephenson Lady Jaguars (20-3, 6-2) are ranked No. 2 in the AJC and No. 3 in MaxPrep and want to lock down the No. 2 seed out of their sub-region behind Tucker with a win over North Atlanta (13-8, 5-3).

In other Region 6-AAAAA action on Friday, the Class AAAAA No 1 ranked Miller Grove Wolverines host the No. 2 Mays Raiders with a chance to seal the Region 6B-AAAAA top seed heading into the Region 6-AAAAA Tournament.

The Wolverines (20-3, 6-0) are riding a nine-game winning streak and hold a one-game lead on Mays (16-4, 4-1) in sub-region play due to a 68-58 victory over the Raiders at Mays in December.

Miller Grove’s balanced attack is led by the trio of seniors Kyre’ Hamer (16.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg) and Earl Bryant (13.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and junior guard Keith Pinckney (13.9 ppg, 5.2 apg). James Walker adds 7.2 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Wolverines while freshman guard Alterique Gilbert averages 8.1 points, 4.5 assists and 3.7 steals.

Mays, ranked No. 2 by the Atlanta Journal Constitution and No. 4 by MaxPrep, is riding a six-game winning streak since an 80-78 upset loss to the Lakeside Vikings on January 8.

The girls’ matchup pits the Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (18-4, 6-0) who are undefeated in sub-region play and ranked No. 3 by the AJC and No. 4 by MaxPrep against a 13-8 Mays squad on a six-game roll of its own. The Lady
Wolverines won the first matchup back in December by a score of 55-27.

A battle of top ranked girls’ teams in Class AAAA will take place at Redan as the Lady Raiders (18-1, 6-1), ranked No. 2 in MaxPrep and No. 4 in the AJC, look to avenge their only loss of the season (65-33) as they host No. 1 ranked Columbia (17-2, 7-0) in a Region 6A-AAAA sub-region battle.

The No. 1 ranked Columbia Eagles (20-2, 7-0) try to remain undefeated in sub-region play with a date against No. 2 Marist on Tuesday (Feb. 5).
