Tucker Middle Band Visits Washington, D.C.

Band performs at the Martin Luther King Memorial and gets a Congressional Proclamation.

I'm Lawrence Jennings, Director of Bands at . I would like to share some exciting news with you with hopes that you can post it in the Patch.

On Thursday March 29, 88 students and 16 parents met at Tucker Middle School at 10 p.m. and loaded two charter buses to travel to Washington DC. The students were members of the Tucker Middle School Symphonic Band, Orchestra and Chorus.

We arrived in Washington Thursday at noon and toured Union Station followed by a tour of the US Postal Museum. Later that evening we went to dinner at Buca di Beppo, an Italian resturant. After dinner we celebrated our arrival with a directors' party in the hotel ballroom.

What I really want to share with you is the opportunity we had to perform at the Martin Luther King Memorial. The orchestra under the direction of Min Kang and the Chorus under the direction of Timothy Simmons performed as well. I was told we were the first ensembles to perform at the King Memorial since its opening.

We were presented with a proclamation by the United States House of Representatives. A representative from the office of Fourth District Congressman Henry C. "Hank" Johnson, Jr. gave the presentation. The students and parents were elated.

This was REALLY BIG for us. We represented Tucker Middle and the community in grand fashion. The students had a photo opportunity to take at the white house and several monuments. We visited the Smithsonian Museum and several national monuments with an illuminated tour at sunset. It was such a moving educational experience to tour our nation's capital.

The proclamation that designated Friday March 30, 2012 as Tucker Middle School Symphonic Band, Symphonic Orchestra and Chorus Day was recorded in the congressional record. This will be a part of our history that members of the ensembles will never forget.
