Seven DeKalb Basketball Teams Going to State Tournament

No. 1 Miller Grove and the No. 7 Tucker Tigers tangle at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Mays.

Region tournament action continued on Wednesday night with seven DeKalb County high school basketball teams winning their way into the state tournament.

The No. 3 ranked Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (21-4) were the first to earn a state tourney berth as they knocked off the Martin Luther King Jr. Lady Lions 82-29 in the first Region 6-AAAAA game at Mays.

Tashi Thompson scored six of her game-high 26 points in the first quarter as Miller Grove jumped out to a 20-6 lead and never looked back. The Lady Lions would get no closer than that 14-point deficit the rest of the game. Klarissa Weaver and Katie Hunt each contributed 14 points for Miller Grove while Kaylin Guthrie put in 10 points for King.

The No. 2 ranked Stephenson Lady Jaguars (23-3) set up a semifinal battle of the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked girls’ teams in Class AAAAA as they defeated host Mays (14-11) 57-37. Stephenson and Redan will start the 6-AAAAA semifinals at 4 p.m. on Friday at Mays.

The game was tied 14-14 with 2:18 to play in the first half when Kerry Watson hit six consecutive points and dished to Kyana Johnson on fast break to complete an 8-0 run to give Stephenson a 22-14 lead at the half. Kaliyah Mitchell scored six points in a 10-4 Stephenson run to open the second half to push the lead to 32-18.

Miller Grove’s Kyre’ Hamer put a stop to a 9-0 run by Southwest DeKalb with a fade away in the lane and was fouled to convert a three-point play to help the No. 1 ranked Wolverines (23-3) shake off the pesky Panthers (12-12) 55-44.

Southwest had closed a 13-point deficit to six (46-40) fueled by Keith Gilmore’s three-pointer and a later steal for an easy basket before Hamer’s big drive. Miller Grove went on to hit six of eight free throws in the final 2:20 to preserve the victory.

The No. 7 ranked Tucker Tigers (18-7) got 25 points from John Dunmeyer on the way to a closer than it seems 69-58 win over Arabia Mountain (12-13). Arabia Mountain put together a run in the third quarter fueled by senior Bakari Copeland who had nine points as the Rams knotted the score at 38-38 at the end of three quarters.

Dunmeyer took over the game at that point scoring 14 consecutive points for the Tigers to open the fourth quarter, including seven of seven from the free-throw line giving the Tigers a 52-39 lead with 5:47 to play.

Copeland who finished with 21 points pulled the Rams back within seven (57-50) with 2:46 to play, but Tucker’s Joshua Ware hit nine of 10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

The win sets up another top 10 basketball semifinal matchup as No. 1 Miller Grove and the No. 7 Tigers tangle at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Mays with first round playoff home court advantage at stake.

The Druid Hills Red Devils (13-9) were seeded sixth in the Region 2-AAAAAA
Tournament, but earned a playoff berth with a 57-53 victory over No. 3 seed Lovejoy (16-9) at Luella on Wednesday. Druid Hills moves on to the semifinals to face No. 2 seed Luella (16-9) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Redan, the No. 2 ranked girls’ team in Class AAAA, earned a Region 6-AAAA semifinal spot and a berth in the AAAA state tournament with a 62-55 win over host South Atlanta (14-12) on Wednesday. Redan will face Grady (18-10) which knocked Chamblee (15-10) out of the postseason with a 63-49 win on Friday at 4 p.m.

The No. 1 ranked Columbia Lady Eagles (20-3) advanced to the Region 6-AAAA
semifinals with a state tournament berth in hand with a 53-29 win over Stone Mountain (8-15) at South Atlanta. Columbia will take on No. 4 ranked Marist (16-6), a 66-35 winner over Carver, in the semis at 7 p.m. on Friday at South Atlanta.
