Nesbit Elementary Wins 2011 Core Essentials Award

Chick-fil-A honored the school for its outstanding character education program.

It's been a year full of accolades and accomplishments for the Tucker-area schools, and Nesbit Elementary is no exception.  Late last week, Chick-fil-A announced that Nesbit was one of just seven schools in the country to earn the "2011 Core Essentials Award" recognizing it for its outstanding work in educating students about character and values.

The Core Essentials program was launched in 1998 in partnership with Chick-fil-A.  At the time, 24 schools in metro-Atlanta participated.  The program has since grown to include over 800 schools throughout the United States, giving the schools the tools and resources they need in order to help educate students on good character traits.  The three goals of the program are helping schools create a culture where students:

A different value, or character quality, is emphasized each month.  The curriculum encourages classrooms, schools, and families to emphasize the same aspects of each character trait, stressing that inward attitudes affect outward behavior.  Some of the topics on the calendar for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year include Knowledge, Creativity, Generosity, and Responsibility.

One of the key components of the program is the "value-able" cards, which teachers give to students caught displaying good character quality and moral values.  These cards are redeemable for free Chick-fil-A kids meals.

Core Essentials Award winners are chosen from the top Core Essentials participants throughout the country.  In order to be considered, schools submitted nomination forms to their local Chick-fil-A franchise.

“Chick-fil-A’s goal is to assist teachers in communicating morals and character education to children, and Nesbit Elementary works closely with us to instill these values in their students,” said Chug Shafe, franchise operator of the Chick-fil-A restaurant on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross. “It’s my privilege to honor Nesbit Elementary for working hard to teach students moral lessons, as well as scholastic ones.  I encourage them to continue.”

Nesbit Elementary will be awarded a $500 donation, as well as an honorary plaque signed by Chick-fil-A President and COO Dan Cathy recognizing its efforts in character education.
