Middle School Basketball: Tucker in Elite Eight
Cedar Grove takes on Region B No. 2 seed Tucker on Wednesday.
The 13th Annual DeKalb County Middle School Basketball Championships move
into the Elite Eight round on Wednesday, Feb. 6 with a new champion assured in the girls’ tournament.
Two-time defending champion Miller Grove which had to win a play-in game
against Stone Mountain on Saturday morning was eliminated by Region D No. 1 seed Cedar Grove later that evening to end the Lady Wolverines’ reign as county champions.
Cedar Grove moves on to take on Region B No. 2 seed Tucker at Tucker Middle in a 5 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
The 2012 runner-up team from Chapel Hill entered at the Region A No. 1 seed and knocked over play-in winner McNair to advance to a 5 p.m. game against Henderson at Redan Middle. Henderson, the No. 3 seed from Region B, got past Region C No. 2 seed Lithonia to advance.
Region B No. 1 seed Champion knocked over Region C No. 4 seed Chamblee to
advance to host Region A No. 3 seed Salem at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Salem upset Region D No. 2 seed Bethune to set up the Elite 8 game against Champion.
The final girls’ Elite 8 game will be hosted by Stephenson as the Lady Jaguars take on Columbia at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Stephenson, the No. 2 seed from Region A defeated Region D No. 3 seed Sequoyah and Columbia defeated play-in winner Peachtree, the No. 4 seed from Region B.
The boys’ bracket still includes the 2012 champions Lithonia Bulldogs, the No. 5 seed out of Region C, who had to earn their way into the main bracket with a play-in win over Stephenson and then knocked off Region D No. 1 seed Cedar Grove in first round play.
The victory set up a rematch of the 2012 championship game as the Bulldogs will face the host Redan Raiders at 5 p.m. on Wednesday in the Elite 8. Redan is the No. 3 seed from Region C and pulled off a victory over Region B No. 2 Henderson to set up the rematch.
Champion was the third place winner a year ago and entered as the No. 3 seed from Region B advanced to the Elite 8 with a victory over Region C No. 2 seed Columbia and will host Region A No. 1 seed Salem at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Salem won its opening round game against play-in winner Peachtree, the No. 5 seed from Region B.
The lower bracket features Miller Grove against Tucker at Tucker at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Miller Grove the Region A No. 3 seed, defeated Region D No. 2 seed Bethune to advance to the Elite 8. Tucker, the No. 1 seed from Region B won against Region C No. 4 seed Stone Mountain in the opening round.
Chamblee and Chapel Hill round out the Elite 8 field in the boys’ bracket in a 5 p.m. game at Stephenson on Wednesday. Chapel Hill entered as the No. 2 seed from Region A and advanced with a victory over Region D No. 3 seed McNair. Chamblee, the Region C No.1 seed defeated play-in game winner Druid Hills to move into the Elite 8.
Semifinal action begins at 4:30 at Miller Grove High School on Friday with the finals set for Saturday at Miller Grove.
