LifeLine Offers 'Creatures For Teachers'

Rescued dogs and cats can be teacher's pets in June when LifeLine waives all adoption fees for educators and school administrators in Georgia.

Georgia schools are quickly wrapping up another school year but LifeLine Animal Project in Avondale Estates wants to spend some of the dog days of summer honoring the teaching profession.

To express appreciation for educators in Georgia, from pre-K to post-grad, the 10-year-old Atlanta nonprofit is waiving their standard $80-$120 pet adoption fees for teachers throughout the month of June and allowing them to adopt a pet for free.

"We have several excellent volunteers at LifeLine who are teachers and we have a true appreciation for what these men and women do for society," said Deb Setzer, who serves as community outreach director for LifeLine and whose mother is also a teacher.

LifeLine recently participated in after-school enrichment programming with the organization Create Your Dreams.

"We have gone into schools in the Atlanta area as part of our Community LifeLine initiative and we see first hand the difference teachers make in the lives of their students and in the well-being of communities," Setzer said. "This offer is just one way we can show some appreciation."

Shelter dogs from LifeLine’s no-kill Dog House and cats and kittens from their cage-free Kitty Motel are all included in the "Creatures For Teachers" offer.

Potential adopters must fill out an application form, either online through LifeLine's "Virtual Shelter," which features adoptable pets from their rescue, or in person at their Avondale location.

All potential pet parents must meet LifeLine’s standard criteria for adopting a pet, but all adoption fees are waived for teachers, teachers aides, principals, vice-principals and school administrators in June.

Pets at LifeLine are current on their vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered and micro chipped. Many dogs who have been at the shelter for any length of time have received some basic obedience training.

LifeLine has offered fee-waived adoptions before, for Girl Scouts during the month of March, when the scouts celebrated their 100th anniversary. They also offer no-fee dog and cat adoptions year around for veterans of military service as part of their "Pets For Vets" program.
