Stephenson, M. L. King remain atop Region 2-AAAAA

The top spot in Region 2-AAAAA is down to a two-way tie between DeKalb County high school football foes Stephenson and Martin Luther King Jr. with both teams undefeated on the season.

Stephenson, 8-0 and ranked No. 4 in Class AAAAA, rallied from a pair of seven point deficits behind the running of Michael Davis to get past upset minded East Coweta (6-2) on Friday night at Hallford Stadium in Clarkston.

The Jaguars trailed 10-3 at the half, but opened the third quarter with a scoring drive capped by T.J. Moon’s 17-yard run for the score to knot the game at 10-10.

East Coweta answered right back marching down the field to take a 17-10 lead on a six-yard touchdown run by Demarcus Godfrey only to see the Jaguars ride the running of Davis who broke away for a 46-yard touchdown run to again knot the game at 17-17 with 1:38 to play in the third quarter.

The Jaguar defense stiffened on East Coweta’s next possession and forced a short punt to take over at the Indian 30-yard line. Stephenson needed seven plays, including a big 10-yard run by Justin Holman on second and eight at the East Coweta 13 to set up a first and goal. Davis went the final yard to give Stephenson a 24-17 lead with 9:45 to play.

East Coweta got the ball back with 3:13 to play at their own 49 and began marching down the field before Stephenson forced the Indians into a fourth and four at the Jaguar six-yard line. Senior defensive lineman Brandon Addison broke through to wrap up the East Coweta quarterback and force a pass that landed harmlessly in the end zone.

Davis finished the game with 123 yards rushing and two touchdowns to lead the Jaguars to the win.

M.L. King 41, Newnan 17
Jonquel Dawson threw for 263 yards and six touchdowns to lead the No. 5 ranked Lions to the 41-17 win to knock Newnan out of a first place tie in Region 2-AAAAA.

Dawson now has 24 touchdown passes on the season which is good for a tie
for third in the DeKalb passing touchdowns in one season category behind
his record setting performance of 41 in 2010.  Blake Tibbs caught nine
passes for 133 yards and a pair of the touchdowns

The Lion defense also forced four turnovers by the Cougars in helping secure the victory.

Other Scores
Region 6-AAAA
Dunwoody 42, Carver-Atl 32
Dunwoody senior Justin King rushed for 294 yards and five touchdowns to help the Wildcats (4-4) rally for a region victory over Carver-Atl (1-7).

The Wildcats trailed 26-14 at the half before rallying behind King in putting together 486 yards rushing in the game. King’s 294 yards was the most in a game this season in DeKalb County.

Miller Grove 21, Chamblee 6
The Miller Grove Wolverines (5-3) knocked Chamblee (4-4) out of a fifth place tie in Region 6-AAAA with a 21-6 victory on Friday night. The Wolverines set up a battle with Southwest DeKalb next Saturday at Hallford Stadium for a playoff berth for the 2011 Class AAAA state playoffs.

Tucker 54, Redan 7
The No. 1 ranked Tucker Tigers improved to 8-0 on the season with a 54-7 Region 6-AAAA victory over the Redan Raiders (2-6).

The Tigers jumped out to a 33-0 by the end of the first quarter thanks in part to two touchdowns in a 12 second span. Tucker is all alone at the top of the region standings.

The Columbia Eagles (5-3) and the Woodward Academy War Eagles (6-2) both
won this past weekend to set up a big Region 5B-AAA between the two teams at Woodward this coming Friday night.

The Eagles improved to 4-1 in region play with a 45-14 win over Arabia Mountain (3-5) while Woodward got past Towers 20-6 to also improve to 4-1 in the region and into a three-way tie for the top spots along with Columbia and Cedar Grove (5-3) which was off this week.
