DeKalb Schools Cross Country: Week Four Results

Druid Hills sweeps opening races at Arabia Mountain.

The fourth week of cross country races in DeKalb County featured a sweep by Druid Hills in the opening varsity race at Arabia Mountain this past Tuesday.

Druid Hills sophomore Ray Lumb clocked the fastest time in two meets at Arabia Mountain with a time of 18:13.11 to win the individual title and lead a group of five Red Devils in the Top 10 finishers of the race.

Freshman Max Atkinson (19:53.47), juniors Jack Cherry (20:17.42) and Joel Medford (20:28.37) finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, for Druid Hills while Komron Noorbakhsh (21:08.53) was 10th.

Southwest DeKalb was second in the boys’ race with 39 points (7 points behind Druid Hills’ 32) with three runners taking the second through fourth spots in the field.

Senior Malik Wheeler led the way with a time of 18:38.20 and was followed by juniors Jacques Williams (19:14.81) and Chris Morris (19:34.65).

Miller Grove junior Rahiim Aponte was fifth overall with a time of 19:46.62 and Lithonia sophomore Justin Goodson was ninth in 21:03.92.

The first girls’ race was won by Southwest DeKalb’s Charlotte Williams in a time of 23:43.43, but Druid Hills took five of the next six finishes to ease to a 24-91 victory over Stephenson.

Sophomore Blair Kennington was the top Druid Hills’ finisher in 24:52.46 while senior teammates Kelsey Sullivan (25:23.38), Jane Neiswander (25:27.06) and Melissa Florkowski (25:27.93) were third through sixth, respectively. Junior Grace Barrett took seventh in a time of 25:28.40.

Southwest DeKalb had a pair of runners in the Top 10 with Williams in Victoria Perez (25:22.25) who finished third in the race despite losing a shoe halfway through the second lap and freshman Neka Stephens who came in eighth in 25:48.66.

The second boys’ varsity race went to Tucker by a margin of 36-57 over Clarkston despite a surprising three Angoras finishing in the Top 5. Leiso Tumbo ran a 19:53.49 to win the boy’s individual title while leading Clarkston to the second place finish. Hussein Sadik (20:43.71) was third and Tony McKnight (21:03.91) was fifth in helping lead the Angoras’ effort. Sean Purcell led Tucker by taking second overall in a time of 20:02.16 as four Tigers were in the first 10 to cross the finish line.

Juniors Eilas Debasy (21:04.76) and Ebenezar Agaro (21:06.50) finished sixth and seventh overall while sophomore Michael Zegeye was 10th in 22:08.25.

The second girls’ race did not have a team winner due to no team having five runners to finish.

Cedar Grove’s Christian Pryor was first in 23:40.11 and was followed in the Top 5 by Tucker’s Jordan Minter (24:54.48), Cedar Grove’s Kayla Pryor (26:41.97), Arabia Mountain’s Corshe’ Stanley (30:58.29) and Ayana Sears (31:15.48).
