Charlie Wasmer Is Student of the Year

Tucker High graduate gets picked by TCA.

The Tucker Civic Association bestowed its annual Student of the Year Award on Monday evening. The following are some of the remarks by TCA Vice-President Beth White Ganga:

Each year TCA awards the Student of the Year Award to honor a graduating senior from Tucker High School who has embodied the spirit of community service. The award includes a plaque and a $300 scholarship check.

This year’s Student of the Year, Charlie Wasmer, has been involved in service and mission work since he was 12 years old. He has donated thousands of hours of time to the contemporary worship service in the audio/video department at Tucker First United Methodist Church and now runs the entire department by himself.

He has been instrumental in training staff at Tucker High in how to use the AV systems and has assisted with most musicals, plays and concerts at THS. He also almost single-handedly the “go to” guy for everything to do with the production of the Taste of Tucker including designing and fabricating all of the stands for the booths as well as handling the audio and power at each event. He has also been involved in the production of Christmas on Main Street as well as several other community events.

Outside of his specialty of audio/video, he has been a part of TIME (Tucker Interfaith Mission Experience) since its inception. TIME is a local mission that provides new roofs for low income families in need the Tucker community. First he served as a volunteer with TIME, and for the last three years he has been a site manager (or TIMEkeeper as they call it).

He has also been involved in the youth group at Tucker Methodist and has participated in almost all of their missions-related activities for the last five years, including volunteering at the Methodist Children’s Home, PAWS Atlanta, Atlanta Food Bank and other activities including “Give an Hour” events sponsored by Tucker Civic Association.

His nominator, Art Wood, has this to say about Charlie:

“As I write about this, I have forgotten about the best thing about Charlie….his attitude! I am trying to think of one time that I have worked with Charlie that he didn’t do it without a smile. I have volunteered him for countless activities and his joking response is “what have you gotten me into this time Art”, but he always accepts with a smile and a willing attitude. He will be attending college in the fall and is deciding between Perimeter and Atlanta Institute of Music. The best part of that is that he is staying local and will continue his service.”

And with that, I’d like to present the 2013 TCA Student of the Year Award to Charlie Wasmer.
