UPDATE: Candidates Announced for DeKalb County Superintendent

Public forum to be held Thursday, March 31

Late Monday night, the DeKalb County School Board announced they will be hosting a public forum to introduce their three candidates for Superintendent of DeKalb County School System.  The forum will take place this Thursday, March 31, at 6 p.m. at the Administration and Instructional Complex (AIC)  Auditorium (1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, Stone Mountain).

The three candidates are Dr. Gloria Davis, Superintendent of Decatur (Illinois) Public Schools, Arthur R. Culver, Superintendent of Champaign (Illinois) Community Unit School District #4, and Dr. Lillie Cox, Superintendent of Hickory (North Carolina) Public Schools.

During the forum, each candidate will speak for 50 minutes and then answer ten written questions from the audience (be prepared for a long meeting, folks).  Parents and community members are invited to submit questions, but must do so in person at the AIC before 5:30 p.m.

Following the presentations, members of the audience will be asked to fill out a survey giving their impressions of each candidate.  These forms will be reviewed and considered by the BOE during their final selection process.

After a year full of upheaval following the abrupt departure of Superintendent Crawford Lewis, the hiring of Interim Superintedent Ramona Tyson, and the extensive redistricting and consolidation process, DCSS appears to be continuing their attempts at transparency and encouraging public engagement. The school system indicated in a press release that the hiring of a permanent superintendent will be a thorough process with many opportunities for public input.

The candidates were solicited and applications collected by Ray & Associates, Inc.,  who conducted a nationwide search for candidates on behalf of DCSS.  The application deadline for candidates was March 1, 2011.
