Basketball: Tucker Heads to State Playoffs

DeKalb claims four region basketball titles.

State basketball playoffs begin on Tuesday and DeKalb County has four teams entering as No. 1 seeds after claiming region championships on Saturday.

The No. 5 ranked Tucker Tigers (18-9) finished as the No. 4 seed out of the region and will travel to Sprayberry (19-9) on Wednesday in the first round of the state playoffs.

Druid Hills ended a run through the Region 2-AAAAAA Tournament with a thrilling 82-81 overtime victory over No. 1 seed Rockdale County (17-8) in boys’ action at Luella.

The Red Devils (15-9) entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and knocked off No. 3 seed Lovejoy, No. 2 Luella and No. 1 Rockdale County in taking the region title to earn a No. 1 seed heading into the Class AAAAAA state playoffs on Tuesday.  Druid Hills will host Douglas County (16-11) on Wednesday.

The No. 1 ranked Miller Grove Wolverines (25-3) won the Region 6-AAAAA boys’ title by defeated fellow DeKalb foe and No. 10 ranked Stephenson (16-12) 55-51 at Mays on Saturday. Both teams will host home playoff games on Wednesday as Miller Grove hosts Sequoyah (21-7) and Stephenson plays host to Pope (20-7).

The Columbia Eagles (25-3) suffered their second loss of the season to South Atlanta (24-4) by a score of 74-73 in the Region 6-AAAA boys’ championship game to enter the state tournament as the No. 2 seed out of the region. The Eagles finished the regular season as the No. 1 ranked team in Class AAAA and will entertain Gilmer County (24-4) on Wednesday in the Class AAAA first round.

The Cedar Grove Saints (22-6) finished as the No. 4 seed out of Region 6-AAA and travel to Buford (22-6) in a game tentatively scheduled for Wednesday.

The Southwest DeKalb Lady Panthers (19-8) entered the Region 6-AAAAA girls’ tournament as the lowest ranked of four ranked DeKalb County teams at No. 9, but won three consecutive games to claim their first region title since 2010. The Lady Panthers upset No. 1 Tucker 54-49 in the semifinals and then knocked off No. 3 Miller Grove (22-5) 60-47 to take the No. 1 seed heading into the state tournament.

Southwest DeKalb is tentatively set to host Region 7’s Sprayberry (19-10) on Tuesday.

Miller Grove, the 2012 Class AAAA state champion, enters with the No. 2 seed and is tentatively scheduled to host Pope (19-8) on Tuesday.

Tucker (24-4) knocked off No. 2 Stephenson (23-5) 63-54 to take the No. 3 seed into the state tournament. Tucker travels to Osborne (23-5) on Tuesday while Stephenson travels to No. 5 Kell (22-2).

Columbia (22-3) won the battle of the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in girls’ Class AAAA as the No. 1 ranked Lady Eagles defeated the No. 2 Redan Lady Raiders (23-2) 49-46 for the Region 6-AAAA title at South Atlanta. It was the second victory in three games against Redan this season for Columbia who is tentatively set to host Pickens County (16-11) on Tuesday. Redan will host Dalton (21-2) on Tuesday as the No. 2 seed.
