Salute to Gwinnett Fallen Heroes

Memorial Day ceremony honors fallen heroes and all men and women who have served honorably in the military during wartime and peacetime.

Thankfully, there are no new names to be added to the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial this year. There still will be a ceremony on Memorial Day saluting the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect the United States. The ceremony also honors all men and women who have served honorably in the military during wartime and peacetime.

The public is invited to attend the observance at 1 p.m. Monday, May 28. This ceremony will mark the ninth anniversary of the dedication of the memorial, according to an announcement issued by Gwinnett County. Members of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and honor guard units from the Gwinnett Police Department, Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services, Sheriff's Office, and the Lawrenceville Police Department will take part in the event.

In addition, members from the Fallen Heroes Memorial Advisory Committee will pay tribute to Brigadier Gen. William Kenneth “Coach Mac” McDaniel, former military advisor to the committee and retired principal at North Gwinnett High School, who died on March 7.

The Memorial Day ceremony will be televised at 7:30 p.m. Monday on TVgwinnett, the county’s local government access cable channel. This program and all TVgwinnett programming are also available streaming and on demand at www.tvgwinnett.com.

The Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial, located on the grounds of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville, honors Gwinnett residents who died in the line of duty in military or public service. The idea for the memorial was conceived by Buford residents Ron and Carolyn Buice, who lost three friends in Vietnam. The memorial opened in 2003 and was built with funds from private donations and Gwinnett County government.

Non-essential Gwinnett County offices will be closed Monday. They will reopen for normal business hours Tuesday, May 29. Normal trash pick-up schedules will be in effect for the holiday.
