Rep. Johnson Helping Homeless Veterans

U.S. Representative Hank Johnson, whose Fourth Congressional District includes Tucker, has announced two Atlanta-based groups will receive more than $1.3 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to fight veterans’ homelessness in 2012-2013.

Action Ministries Inc. of Atlanta will receive $1 million and Decatur Cooperative Ministry Inc., $320,000 to provide financial and emotional support, as well as housing stability, for veterans in the Fourth District and throughout metro Atlanta.

“Veterans have served us faithfully, and it is our responsibility to give them the support they need to rebuild their lives,” said Rep. Johnson, whose office sent a letter of support to the VA for the grants.

The grants are part of more than a $100 million nationwide effort in homeless prevention that is going to 151 non-profit community agencies in 49 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The program, Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF), is part of President Obama’s pledge to “be relentless” in his pursuit of ending veterans’ homelessness within the decade.

Beth Vann-Turnbull, executive director of Decatur Cooperative Ministry, said the grants are an invaluable tool to help prevent veteran homelessness and provide housing for veterans currently on the streets.

“We are very excited to have new resources that will allow us to help the many veterans calling our local VA hotline for help,” said Vann-Turnball. “This funding enables us not only to provide financial assistance to house veterans, but also to provide comprehensive services and support that addresses some of the root causes of veteran homelessness.”
