Rep. Holcomb Visits Pre-K Students at Henderson Middle

Scott Holcomb read to local 4-year-olds on Monday.

To celebrate Georgia’s Pre-K program and its 20th Anniversary, State Representative Scott Holcomb (D-Atlanta) read to a group of 4-year-olds this morning at Henderson Mill Elementary School as part of Georgia Pre-K Week 2012.

October 1-5 is the state’s 2nd official Georgia Pre-K Week, sponsored by Voices for Georgia’s Children and its Pre-K Week partners. State Representative Scott Holcomb is one of nearly 140 state officials who will visit some of the approximately 3,800 Pre-K classrooms located in all 159 counties in Georgia.

“Early childhood education is critical to the future success of our students, and preparing for elementary school is an important part of life for a child from birth through age five,” said State Representative Scott Holcomb. “I am thrilled to be honoring some of our youngest learners this week, and proud of what our state is accomplishing through Georgia’s Pre-K program,” said Holcomb. “It is critical that we continue to invest in education so we can compete. While Georgia has many challenges, none surpasses the need for us to have a world-class educational system for our children. They will grow up to compete in a globally competitive world, and we need to prepare them for that. It begins with early childhood education.”

"As the parent of a first grade student here, I’m very proud of the school and it was a treat for me to visit,” said Holcomb.  “I’d like to thank Camille Kesler, Grayson Pratt, and Teresa Ebbs from the Junior League of Atlanta for joining me this morning, and I also want to acknowledge and thank Voices for Georgia’s Children and its partners for organizing this wonderful event,” said Holcomb.

“Lastly, I want to applaud Dr. Rebecca Jackson, the principal of Henderson Mill Elementary School, the school’s staff, administration, and its wonderful teachers for their dedication to the students.”

“Georgia’s Pre-K is an exceptional education program that serves 84,000 4-year-olds throughout Georgia,” said Pat Willis, Executive Director of Voices for Georgia’s Children, a child advocacy organization.  “Pre-K is a milestone in a child’s early education. Studies show that early education programs for children age birth to five — in all income groups — will have long-term impact on a child’s education. We are proud that Georgia’s Pre-K is making a difference in the lives of so many of our youngest learners, preparing them for future success in school and in life.”

Rep. Holcomb is the incumbent for House District 81 which covers portions of Northlake, Tucker, Doraville, Chamblee, and Brookhaven in DeKalb County, and the southern part of Norcross in Gwinnett County.

Well,in Tucker and many other places it's not humans moving into areas that were once for wildlifeRead More only. The coyotes have no memory of that. This is part of a general acclimitization of wildlife (deer, coyote, fox, turkey - even bear) to suburban and even quasi-urban conditions. Food is plentiful as are hiding places, and enemies are few. Coyotes do not need to be eradicated, but their needs to be a removal and/or sterilization program in areas where coyotes are a threat.

Yes I do believe in protecting wildlife and preserving our natural world as best as possible at thisRead More point. And yes I think we've messed up our planet by over populating as humans. Having said that...now that we have densely populated urban & suburban areas as in the metro Atlanta area including tucker, I think coyotes or rattlesnakes or other carnivorous animals need to be kept to a minimum in densely populated areas...the solution is for us to have zero population growth & preserve lands where wildlife & exist without us encroaching on them...but coyote attacks in backyards 10 miles from the center of a city of 7 million people...nah, something's wrong with that...animal control...do your job!!!

I am unapologetic about our human numbers on this wonderful planet! This bit of land that I careRead More for, "10 miles from the center of a city of 7 million people" is well-fenced. I do think that Animal Control ought to trap and remove coyotes that threaten my pets! Evidently the coyote wasn't rabid, thank goodness! But this was a LARGE animal, large enough to be a threat to small children. If they run and hunt in packs, they would be dangerous to humans, I think. So it's not just pets.
