Georgia Rep. Scott Holcomb Attends Northlake Community Alliance Meeting

Holcomb reports on key General Assembly issues

The Northlake Community Alliance, Inc. conducted a monthly board of trustees meeting last night at its 2302 Parklake Drive office. Chairman Tom Ulbricht noted that the NCA’s Electronic Recycling Event will be held in the Northlake Mall parking lot behind Macy’s on Saturday, Mar. 19 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

For a list of the many electronic items accepted, visit http://www.nlake.org/calendar/. With the exception of a $10 fee for televisions, there will be no charge. The event is also being sponsored by Northlake Mall and Electronic Recycling Services.

Tax-exempt donations would be appreciated and would benefit the important work of NCA and Simon Youth Foundation. Chairman Tom Ulbricht said volunteers will be needed to make this event run smoother.

First-term Georgia Rep. Scott Holcomb attended the meeting and praised the electronic recycling initiative. He noted that 38 states, but not Georgia, have electronic waste statutes and/or regulations on their books.

Holcomb talked about some of the key issues being discussed during the current General Assembly session.

  • The fiscal year 2012 budget will require about another $1.5 billion in cuts.
  • A bill targeting illegal immigration, HB 87, is in committee and will likely come out for debate.
  • The numbers are just not there to continue the Hope Scholarship in its present form. Numerous modifications are being discussed.
  • The use of Lake Lanier for drinking water is still a hot-button issue and severe court-enforced restrictions in 2012 loom. Holcomb praised Gov. Nathan Deal for actively reaching out to Alabama and Florida to resolve the problem.

Holcomb pointed out that he is on the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee, Motor Vehicles Committee and Children and Youth Committee. “I’m glad to be down there and proud to be representing you,” he said.

Northlake Mall manager Marie Moore reported that Old Navy will soon be replaced by a nationally-known apparel retailer. Greeting card retailer Social Expressions is also leaving. Nonetheless, Moore said overall leasing activity has been solid.

The next Northlake Community Alliance board meeting will be on Mar. 17 at 7:30 p.m. NCA is a public, non-profit organization run by community volunteers to sustain and improve the Northlake area. For more information, visit http://www.nlake.org/.
