Georgia Teens Ride with P.R.I.D.E.

P.R.I.D.E (Parents Reducing Injuries and Driver Error) is hosting a class today, Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at the Board of Health. Students receive a completion certificate that some parents use for decreases on their insurance as well.

The class is free and offered for parents and teens of DeKalb. The program addresses driver attitude, knowledge, and behavior and complements driver education and training.

In Georgia, motoe vehicle accidents are leading coause of death for teenagers. In order to address this problem, the University of Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute (G.T.I.P.I.) has developed a statewide program called Georgia Teens Ride with P.R.I.D.E. (Parents Reducing Injuries and Driver Error). The program offers Parent/Teen Driver Education classes for DeKalb County residents. These classes target parents/guardians and their teenage drivers who are either just beginning to drive or are preparing for a learner’s permit. The course is FREE.

This is not a hands-on, mechanical “how-to” course, but a class that addresses driving attitude and behavior of teenagers ages 14-16. This course will:
• help parents/guardians become more aware of their own driving behaviors;
• teach parents/guardians how to help their teenagers become safe drivers;
• help parents/guardians and teenagers learn what they need to do during the supervised practice driving time required to obtain a license; and
• alter attitudes and driving behaviors of novice teenage drivers.

Class will be held Dec. 1, 2011 at the DeKalb County Board of Health, 445 Winn Way Decatur, GA 30031. To register, choose your date, complete the attached registration form and return it by mail or fax. You may also call and register yourself and your child. The teenager and at least one parent or guardian (who will supervise the practice time) must be present during the entire two-hour course. Class size is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is a full partner in this program.

Note: This is a FREE, two-hour course designed to help parents and their new teen drivers, ages 14-16, learn what they need to do during the 40 hours of supervised practice driving time.

This is a program that addresses driver attitude, knowledge, and behavior, rather than a technical hands-on driver training course.

While completion of this course may reduce insurance rates, it does not count toward the required 40 hours of supervised driving practice.
