DeKalb Officials Hosting Cityhood Meeting

Editor's note: In the wake of the ongoing discussion surrounding the possible cityhoods and the creation of Dunwoody and Brookhaven in recent years, DeKalb County officials have set a public meeting with residents to discuss the trend. The meeting is being hosted by Ga. State Sen. Ron Ramsey, State Rep. Pam Stephenson and DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson.

On Thursday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. at Southwest DeKalb High School, 2863 Kelley Chapel Road in Decatur, state and county leaders are hosting a meeting concerning cityhood.

Public input and public comments will be taken at this meeting.

The focus of the meeting will be to provide information to residents on the differences between cities and counties, what it takes to become a city and the impact of cityhood.

“The topic of cityhood has become the focus of many conversations around the county, it is important that we as elected officials, provide information to the general public on what all of this means,” Johnson, one of the hosts of the meeting, said in a statement.

State Sen. Ramsey and State Rep. Stephenson will be providing information on the bills they have submitted surrounding cityhood.

“This is a discussion that all residents of DeKalb should be a part of; there are a lot of factors involved and until and unless we can get the information into the hands of the people, informed decisions cannot be properly made,” Johnson said.
