DeKalb Educator Considering U.S. Senate Bid

Cross Keys' Aubury Webb says the nation needs to return to its values.

A Cross Keys High School educator is considering a U.S. Senate bid in 2014.

In an exclusive interview, Aubury Webb told Patch on Tuesday that, "If I can get the support from some key Democratic Party leaders and officials, then I'd be willing to run."

After two long careers in both the private and military sectors, Webb, a student support specialist at Cross Keys, returned to school in 2006 to earn his Ph.D. While pursuing his doctorate, he was a substitute teacher in the DeKalb school system, and has been fulltime at Cross Keys since July 2011.

"We need for our nation to come back together as a community," Webb said. "We're going down a slippery slope. We need to get back to basics. I'd give my life for the United States. We need each other, and we need to realize that we are our brothers' and sisters' keeper."

Webb was one of the first African-American students to graduate from Rockdale County High School in 1966. He was drafted in 1968 and spent four years in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.

After his tour was over, Webb went back to school at Morehouse College and graduated in 1975.

He then served in several capacities in both the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and National Guard for more than 20 years. He retired from AT&T in 2004, and then attended Argosy University from 2006 to 2010.

"The United States is still the beacon of the world," he said. "But people of my generation had the experiences of the Great Depression, two World Wars, Korea and Vietnam. They realized you have to earn what you receive."
