Atlanta police SWAT
units stormed a motel room in southwest Atlanta late Monday, ending a nine-hour
standoff and arresting two suspects wanted in a series of DeKalb County crimes.
Officers were called out to the Travel Inn shortly after 3 p.m. Monday after learning suspects -- brothers 16-year-old Cutrez Johnson and 19-year-old Oslushla Smith --might be at the hotel, reports WSB TV. They were sought by police for this weekend’s fatal shooting of a 9-month-old Kendarius Edwards in Stone Mountain.
The shooting was part of a violent home breakin that sent three women to the hospital, including the baby's mother and grandmother. Friends say all the women are expected to survive.
Police finally entered the motel room at about 11:30 p.m., leading away one man in handcuffs, a woman and child walked out of the hotel room and a second man was carried out in a stretcher, according to TV reports.
DeKalb County's Public Safety Director Cedric
Alexander said, "We're certain at this point that the arrests made
will help us in the continuation of the investigation into the death of that
According to police, the baby was shot three to four times at point-blank range, says WGCL TV.
Police suspect the attack in Stone Mountain was retaliation for the murder of Alexis Malone, 19. Investigators also suspect Malone's friend, Kayla Dixon is somehow involved in her murder and have issued a warrant for her arrest.
“It’s complicated,” said Chief
Alexander. “It’s insane. It’s insane. Masked gunman came into the home. The
three women took the baby, ran upstairs, tried to lock themselves in the
upstairs bathroom. The gunmen kicked the door open and commenced firing.”
The victims’ names were not released. The women are 36, 23, and 21, police said. The 21-year-old is thought to have been the baby’s mother.
Investigators said the crimes are linked to an incident on May 3, the day of a deadly party shooting. Police believe Johnson, Smith, and Kemontay Cullins, 18, were all involved in the earlier shooting. Cullins was arrested earlier.
Then, Alexis Malone's body was found May 10. Investigators told WSB that Johnson, Smith, Cullins and Kayla Dixon killed Malone because she knew something about the party shooting.
A few hours after Malone’s body was found on Agape Way in DeKalb, masked armed men stormed the home on Tolani Farm Road and shot the three women, injuring them, and fatally shot the 9-month-old boy.
Police suspect the
home invaders wanted to avenge Malone's death and hoped to find brothers
Johnson and Smith at the home, but instead found their mother, sister, sister's
son and sister's friend.
The two brothers already have been charged with murder for shooting deaths on May 3 and May 10, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Police have not released the names of those believed responsible for the home invasion that killed 9-month-old Kendarius, but have said the crime is linked to others.
