Student Hit By Car Outside School

Crossing guard was helping children cross the street outside Evansdale Elementary

A student at Evansdale Elementary School was hit by a car this morning while being assisted across the street by a crossing guard. The student, whose name and gender were not released by the school, was taken by ambulance to Scottish Rite Hospital with what was described as a "minor foot injury."

The accident occurred at 7:30 a.m. at the corner of Evans Road and Evans Woods Drive. A statement issued by school principal Daniel McGuire said: "One of the crossing guards was in the middle of the crosswalk assisting the student across the median when the incident occurred."

The crossing guard was identified in the statement as Ms. Pam, who was thanked by the principal for "her immediate response and her handling of the situation."

Dr. McGuire stated that he had spoken to DeKalb County police, school officials and Evansdale staff since the accident and is reviewing arrival and dismissal procedures for students. "I will continue to partner with our county government to insure the safety of all our children who are walkers, bikers, and riders to school," he said.

A note sent to parents by school officials said: "Driving safety has been an issue in the neighborhood and around the school for some time," adding that police have been asked to monitor the area.
