The shooting death Monday of one man at the Celadon Apartments on Norcross-Tucker border is still under investigation.

Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Edwin Ritter said the homicide unit is currently investigating the apparent shooting death of Steven Carden of Marietta and the injury to Thomas Smith, who was with Carden.

Smith received head injuries during the incident. Smith, 28, who is from Powder Springs was transported Monday morning to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment.

Ritter said on Monday, shortly after 7 a.m., Gwinnett police responded to a call at 6055 S. Norcross Tucker Road, located near the DeKalb County line regarding a "person down" call.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered a deceased (white) male with a gunshot wound lying on the ground in front of building "F" and a second (white) male with blunt force trauma to his head," said Ritter.

Smith told police that he and Carden "were walking through the apartment complex when they had brief conversation with two black males. Then at some point Smith was struck from behind by an unknown object."

Investigators have interviewed Smith and other potential witnesses on scene and are currently following up on leads. Ritter said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
