Updated: 1:10 p.m. Tuesday.

A man shot by Gwinnett Police officers near the scene of a fight Saturday night in unincorporated Tucker has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

According to Gwinnett Police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith, the man has been identified as Maynor Ramirez. He is in serious condition at a local hospital. He will remain under guard there until his condition allows him to be transferred to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Smith said in a press release that Ramirez, 31, had threatened two Gwinnett officers with a large kitchen knife after 10:44 p.m. Saturday, when the officers responded to a call about a fight at 1346 Southern Wood Drive. According to police, several Hispanic males were fighting and at least one had a knife.

The officers approached Ramirez, who appeared to be intoxicated, according to police, and told him to drop the knife. Instead, the suspect raised the knife over his head and moved toward the officers. Both officers shot once “at virtually the same time,” both hitting the suspect, according to Smith.

The officers then called for an ambulance.

Smith said the officers are on paid administrative leave, in line with department policy for officers involved in a shooting.
