(UPDATE) DeKalb Mom Charged with Felony Murder in Death of Child

The cause of death has not been released pending an autopsy.

WSB-TV reports that Bemis has told investigators that she suffocated her child with a pillow because she was upset that her boyfriend broke up with her.

According to DeKalb police, a 21-year-old mother who lives near Stone Mountain has been charged with felony murder in connection with the death of her 3-year-old daughter.

Meriel Bemis, who reportedly lives in the Landmark at Mountain View Apartments, was booked into the DeKalb County Jail early Monday morning in following the death of her daughter on Sunday evening.

The girl, Lela Bemis, was pronounced dead on arrival at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, after her mother’s boyfriend had called police at approximately 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

The cause of death has not been released pending an autopsy.
