With the recent record low temperatures many homeowners woke up to find that they had no water, then a few short days later they found that their pipes had thawed and they had water leaks throughout their homes. Here are some suggestions to prevent this from happening to you. This is a good practice when low temperatures are 20 degrees or colder.
1. Disconnect all exterior hoses from the outdoor faucets and cover the faucets with Styrofoam insulation covers. They are available at any hardware store for about $4.
2. Leave your faucets dripping slightly. Water in movement freezes much slower that water static in pipes.
3. Open all of your sink cabinet doors to allow heat into the area where the pipes are. This goes a long way to prevent freezing.

Lastly, locate the INTERIOR shutoff valve to your outside faucets, and know how to turn water off at the street should a leak occur.
As we have two more months of winter, anything can happen with Georgia weather. Take these simple precautions and you stand a great chance of staving off the frozen pipe dilemma.
