What Memorial Day Means to Me

My thoughts on Memorial Day and what it means.

As I sit here on the day before the official observance of Memorial Day watching the movie "Sergeant York," I am disappointed to hear fireworks going off around my neighborhood.

It's bad enough that we observe Memorial Day on Monday every time so we can all have a three-day weekend instead of on the actual day, but to celebrate with fireworks goes beyond the pale for me.

This should be a somber remembrance of the supreme and total sacrifice of those brave military members who have given their very lives so that we can enjoy freedom. They stood brave in the face of evil such as the Nazi regime and fought back against those who would take over other countries and enslave their people.

The white markers on each small grave for these heros are reminders that freedom isn't free. It has a high price and those who pay it for us deserve our reflection and a day when we don't celebrate with fireworks but remember with prayer and thankfulness the blood they spilled on foreign soil to keep our homeland free from those who want to harm us and take our freedom away.

To those families who have given their favorite son or daughter for America, for us, for me, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. We are forever thankful you loved this country and what she represents enough to give your loved one for that cause and ideal.
