What Are You Doing to Make a Difference?

Think about the problems that can be helped.

One of the many hats I wear on a weekly basis is leading a small children’s group called “The Kids Care Club.”  The group participates in many community outreach events around the Tucker/Stone Mountain area.  For safety reasons, I try my best to keep activities on campus.  If you have ever dealt with insurance and liability you know that it can be a pill!  So, as you can imagine, all my good ideas for this school year were gone by about February.  So, there I was a couple of weeks ago, with several months of activities to plan and NOTHING coming to me.

Then I got the craziest idea that would ever come into my A-type brain: just ask the kids.  I went to the craft closet and got a roll of paper and covered the tables.  I grabbed colored pencils and crayons and scattered them all over the place.  When the kids entered that night, I read them stories of how other children had made a difference in the world.  We learned about a girl who raised thousands of dollars to buy nets for African children.  We read about a boy in Ohio who organized his first charity walk in middle school.

After reading these stories I looked at them and said, “You have the power to change the world.  What do you want to do?”

Blank stares.

“Think about the world around you.  Think about the problems that can be helped.  What do you think breaks God’s heart?”

The pictures I had by the end of the night were some of the most beautiful, heart breaking ones I have ever seen.  There were pictures of homelessness, natural disasters, and pollution.  When they were finished we took a minute to pray for the problems and then picked one that we wanted to help for the rest of the school year.  The kids chose homelessness by an overwhelming majority.

So I ask you, what are you doing to make a difference?
