Conductive Education Camp Coming to Tucker

Conductive Education teaches muscle control to children with motor disorders.

Conductive Education (or C.E.) is a method of teaching muscle control that is specifically designed for children with motor disorders such as Cerebral Palsy. The school of thought behind C.E. is that a child is a student rather than a patient. The goal is to help the child learn how to integrate and coordinate various functions to better assimilate them into their world.

My personal experience with C.E. was last summer. A child that I care for attended a camp held in Dacula. Within the course of the three week camp, she learned to wash dishes as well as cut with a knife and jump down a hallway without being “spotted.”  These tasks may seem simple, but to a young girl who went to school using a walker, this was a huge advance for a short time commitment. Although I would say that this story is not typical, a source that I referenced stated that one-third of the motor-disordered children with damage to the central nervous system improved with the help of C.E. Those are not bad odds.

I am very excited that Tucker will host this year. The closest Conductive Education camp I have heard of outside of this one is located in Florida. The nonprofit that organizes this camp is called A Step To Independence.
