Locals Celebrating Johns Homestead Park

There's a big event on Sunday, July 14 at Johns Homestead Park.

We hope you will enjoy America's Independence Day this week with family and friends while we remember those service men and women who have given their lives all over the world to keep our country safe.

In case you have not heard the great news, Johns Homestead Park was saved from the development of the future animal shelter. The new shelter will be built at the PDK site as the Animal Shelter proponents desired from the beginning. That was three weeks of dedicated work from Tucker Historical Society, Tucker Civic Association and Friends of Johns Homestead Park, concerned nearby neighbors and everyone who helped support by emails and phone calls to all the commissioners.

It was a crazy time of last minute meetings with DeKalb County COO, Zack Williams, discussions on the side with anyone from the commissioners offices who would speak to us, assistance from the Georgia Chapter of Sierra Club and the Atlanta Audubon Society, and many others I can't even recall now.

This event brought Tucker together once again in its truest spirit of community - fighting for something that many believed in and with a very loud voice the commissioners heard you.

Put this on your calendar! There will be a big celebration on Sunday, July 14th from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Johns Homestead Park. There will be tours of the inside of the old home and out buildings and you can enjoy the newly blazed trails on the property. This win to save this greenspace is a very big win and we invite everyone to come out to celebrate with us! More details will follow so watch for updates from us.

Thanks to all who participated in the various ways! Just remember there is much more to do to help Johns Homestead Park and your support every step on the way will be important. As a reminder there is no July meeting scheduled, but we hope to have a field trip to a important Tucker institution for August. As details are confirmed we will keep you informed.

Have a safe and happy 4th!
Harry, Kathy, Trish and Vicki
