'Fore a Cure' Golf Tournament Saturday

At the tournament, a bench will be dedicated in memory of Cassie Corkran.

By Pat Soltys

Smoke Rise resident Ed Corkran will sponsor the Fore A Cure Golf Tournament at Smoke Rise Country Club on Sept. 28. The tournament was initiated and organized by Cassie Corkran originally in 2009 to raise money for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure.

Cassie was passionate in her work to support finding a cure for breast cancer, participating in many fund raisers and walks. She always wore a necklace that had small pink ribbons with names of those who were breast cancer survivors, patients and those taken by the disease. In February 2013, Cassie lost her battle with thyroid cancer. Now Ed, her husband and daughter Reilly are carrying on the tradition she started.

The 18 hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. and include prizes for golf, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and cook out. At the tournament, a bench will be dedicated in memory of Cassie.

Players, sponsors and volunteers are needed. Golfers play is $500 per team or $125 per individual. For more information either call Stuart Pierce at 770-908-2582 option 1 or email Ed at golfwalk4thecure@gmail.com.

Ed, Reilly and many members of Cassie’s team will walk in the 3 Day on October 18, 19, and 20th. Donations and participation in either the walk or the tournament are welcome. Checks should be made out to 2013 Walk for the Cure.
