Community Corner

International Rescue Committee Open House

The International Rescue Committee will host an open house at their new Tucker location on Thursday, April 28, to give community members an opportunity to learn more about their programs, which aid refugees newly arrived from refugee camps and war-torn regions of the world to start their lives afresh in the Atlanta area.

Refugees from Burma, Bhutan, Iran, Congo, and Sudan will describe their experience fleeing war zones and persecution, living in refugee camps and other makeshift settings.  Refugees will also reflect on the opportunity they were given to come to the United States and start their lives anew, along with the challenges and the triumphs they have encountered since coming here, from learning a new language and culture, to finding their first job, to enrolling their children in school, and applying for US citizenship.

Executive director Ellen Beattie, along  with IRC caseworkers, educators and employment specialists will discuss their work, from the first stages of resettlement to providing refugees with the vital support they need to become self sufficient – including employment assistance, healthcare access, English language classes and immigration services.
