Community to Celebrate World Refugee Day

The Georgia Coalition of Refugee Stakeholders will host a celebration of World Refugee Day on Friday, June 17, to showcase the talents and cultures of refugees newly arrived from refugee camps and war-torn regions of the world. The daytime event will take place at the Clarkston Community Center, and all are welcome.

World Refugee Day was first declared by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001 to highlight the plight of the world’s 15 million refugees. Georgia is home to at least 60,000 refugees, and some 3,000 refugees are resettled to metro Atlanta annually, making the metro Atlanta area among the 5th largest populations of refugee resettlement in the country.

This year’s event will feature music and dance performances by recently resettled Burmese, Bhutanese, Somali and West African refugees. There will also be international food, movie screenings, raffles and information booths for people to learn more about services for refugees. Staff and directors of coalition member organizations will be on hand to answer questions from the media or community.
