Johns Homestead Park Saved From Destruction

DeKalb County Commissioners voted Tuesday to put the new animal shelter at PDK Airport.

By Kathy Powell

A few minutes after I heard it on the channel 23 streaming live on the website, our friend, Dave Butler called to let me know of the vote. I was relieved that I heard it correctly because I just got on when the vote was in action. I was afraid I didn't hear it right.

There will always be much work to do for Johns Homestead and the pristine greenspace property as well as all the other parks and greenspace, but today is a great day for celebrating! So many people came together from all over to make their voice heard in the past weeks and today we have the good news.

Special thanks goes to Friends of Johns Homestead Park and to Tucker Civic Association for their strong support and many thanks to the hundreds of neighbors who spoke out who would have been affected by the destruction of the land and the concerns of dealing with an animal shelter so close to their homes and churches.

Good work everyone, now go out and celebrate Tucker's 121st anniversary!
