DeKalb Public Safety Commemorates 9/11 Anniversary

DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners and the DeKalb County Police and Fire Rescue departments will conduct a memorial on the 10-year anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8 a.m. at the DeKalb Public Safety Headquarters, 1950 West Exchange Place in Tucker.

Earlier this summer, a group of DeKalb County firefighters secured a piece of the World Trade Center and drove to New York on their time off to retrieve it. Since then, volunteer artists have been working diligently to incorporate the piece into a dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks. The memorial will be housed outside the Public Safety Headquarters.

The artifact will be delivered in a caravan of public safety vehicles leaving the Bobby Burgess building on Camp Road at 8 a.m. For the duration of the caravan, interstates and roads along the route will be closed. Once the monument is placed, there will be 11 seconds of silence, a 21- gun salute, and a changing of the guard, as well as reflections from CEO Ellis and Public Safety officials.
