Bites Nearby: Baraka Shawarma Mediterranean Grill

Basic, affordable Mediterranean food.

The unassuming façade and slightly cramped dining area – aside from the few bistro sets outside – don’t do the food at Baraka Shawarma justice. If you’re looking for gourmet Mediterranean cuisine with high price tags, this grill isn’t your best bet. But the fare is seasoned well, the portions are hearty with a bit of kick, and each dish I’ve tried carried with it the flavors of traditional Mediterranean street food.

The place opens around 11:30 a.m., is located at 4188 East Ponce de Leon Ave in Clarkston and has been around for nearly a year and a half.

Two of us enjoyed a falafel sandwich and a shawarma plate with chicken, rice, salad and pita…plus two wedges of baklava for lunch. We could have saved enough for dinner, but we behaved a bit gluttonously and consumed the majority of the hefty portions. The chicken in the shawarma plate was nice and juicy, spicy under their special sauce on a bead of warm, yellow rice. The salad was a bit underwhelming, but the banana peppers and creamy tzatziki made a valiant effort to redeem it.

The falafel sandwich with Greek tahini was good, not amazing, but good. The flavor of the falafel was spot on, but it was a bit drier than I prefer.

The baklava was flaky, sweet and tasty.

Overall, for around $16, we were very satiated and pleased, plus, we always love quick and friendly service.

Feedback

“I actually love [Baraka Shawarma],” says Michael Blaylock, Valdosta State graduate student; “I make a point to get grub from there every time I’m in Tucker visiting my mom. The main reason I go there is because it reminds me of food I ate while in Egypt. I’ve only tried those dishes found in the southern parts of the Mediterranean, and of course it isn’t exactly the same as what I enjoyed in Egypt, but it’s the closest I’ve found in the States. Plus, I like to support local business and food is almost always better in small mom and pop joints. The one friendly lady that works there always remembers me, even if it’s been a few months since I’ve been there,” Blaylock concluded.

Other Reviews

Their food has received mixed reviews on Yelp, and one diner brings to light the fact that their name is spelled differently on their exterior sign and menu – something I find a little quirky but certainly not a fact by which to judge their food.

If you’re interested in sampling some simple, fairly-priced Mediterranean food that’s nearby, I recommend giving Baraka Shawarma a try.
