Annual Road Race Ready To Go

Pre-register now for the May 7 event

The 56th annual Tucker Road Race will take place Saturday, May 7, 2011.  There will be two races: the 1 mile Fun Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. and the 5K Run will begin at 8:30 a.m. A warm up for each race will begin 15 minutes prior to start time.

Per the Tucker Road Race website, the 5K event is a “measured 3.1 mile loop with a flat start, a challenging hill in the middle, and a semi-flat finish.”  The race starts and ends at Tucker High School, snaking through the surrounding neighborhoods off Chamblee-Tucker and Old Norcross Roads.  Click here for a course map. The 5K is a USATF-Certified Course and a pre-qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race held every year on July 4 in Atlanta.

1968 Gold-Medal Olympic Runner Mel Pender, Jr. will be at the race to help present awards.  In addition, a limited number of autographed pictures of THS alumnus and Olympic Gold Medalist Dwight Phillips will be available.

Typically, the Tucker Road Race coincides with the annual celebration, which has been cancelled this year due to ongoing Main Street construction.  "Hopefully, it won't affect it too badly," Geonice Hanchett, one of the organizers of the event, said.  "Last year the race had close to 300 participants," she said, and she's hoping for that again this year.  She indicated that next year, hopefully, the Tucker Road Race and Tucker Day will coincide again.

The event is sponsored by Tucker High School’s Marching Band, with proceeds going toward instruction, music, and equipment.  Pre-register online or at Tucker High School’s Main Office by Monday, May 2.  Prices are $20 adults and $10 kids 12 and under.  On race day, registration begins at 6:45 a.m. is $25 for everyone and is cash only.
