What's happening in the World of Wellness

In today's wellness news: Cancer screenings (TCB), Brockovich to the rescue and fat doctors.

* Not only are relatively few Americans getting screened for cancer these days but also there are considerable differences between ethnic and racial groups in the country.  This is what the National Cancer Institute had to say this week.  Apparently, if you are Hispanic or Asian American you are not getting screened at all or at least a very limited few. The CDC says not all Americans are getting the recommended screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers. Screenings saves lives!  When you catch a cancer at a smaller size it does affect outcome.

So, if you are Hispanic or Asian American or frankly anyone and everyone… let me encourage you to go get screened. It is a simple and pain-free test. You will live longer, and be happy that you took care of business.

* Have you heard about the mysterious illness causing facial tics and verbal outburst among 15 teenagers in Le Roy, New York?  Most of the teens have been diagnosed with conversion disorder––that is a psychological condition that causes physical symptoms such as jerky movements, or tics, convulsions and even paralysis.

Well, never fear Erin Brockovich is here! She is the woman that Julia Roberts portrayed in the movie by the same name. Ms. Brockovich suspects groundwater contamination from a chemical spill from more than 40 years ago may be behind the Tourette–like symptoms.

I hope that they find that it is more than a psychological disorder. I have seen videos of these girls and they must be living miserable lives right now.

* Are you obese? It might depend on whether your doctor is, too. A recent study shows that physicians who were overweight or obese were far less likely to diagnose obese patients than physicians at a more normal weight. Physicians with normal BMI also have greater confidence in their ability to provide diet and exercise counseling and perceive their weight loss advice as trustworthy when compared to overweight or obese doctors.

So, the next time you go see your doctor, while you are stepping up on the scale for him, maybe you should be sizing him up to.  Just sayin’…
