Tucker's Habitat for Humanity Presents Golden Hammer Awards

The event will be Thursday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the Oakhurst Village of Decatur.

Growler Time Draught Beer and Wine to Go and Sweet Dee's Bakeshop announce their sponsorship of the Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb’s annual Golden Hammer Awards. The event will be Thursday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the historic Solarium at Old Scottish Rite in the Oakhurst Village of Decatur.

Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb, along with donors, volunteers and community leaders, will honor individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions toward the group’s mission of providing decent, safe, affordable housing to residents of DeKalb County.

The 2013 Golden Hammer Awards will include live music by The Dammages and a silent auction, featuring prizes such as a week-long stay at a Tuscan Villa in Italy and tickets for four to an Atlanta Braves game in addition to a personal visit from Homer, the official Braves mascot. Appetizers, refreshments and a cake designed by Sweet Dee's featuring the Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb’s 25th anniversary logo will be served.

Money raised at the event will benefit Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb’s affordable housing work with low-income families in DeKalb County. With the help of volunteers and homeowner families, Habitat for Humanity, a global organization headquartered in Atlanta, builds and renovates houses sold to those in need at no profit.

Both sponsors of this year’s awards are located on Main Street in downtown Tucker, near the offices of Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb. Michelle Hamilton, President of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb and owner of Growler Time Draught Beer & Wine to Go, is pleased at the chance for the organizations to partner.

“As owner of Growler Time and a long-time advocate for Habitat, I’m happy to find another way to help Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb with its incredible work.  When I mentioned the event to Denise at Sweet Dee's, she couldn't say ‘yes’ fast enough! Of course, most of all, we’re excited to get the local Tucker community involved with the 25th anniversary celebration,” says Hamilton.

Indeed, Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb has a lot to celebrate this year. Bob Boyd has recently been handed the reigns as Executive Director.  Bob was formerly the Executive Director at the Athens Area Humane Society and worked for many years with the Boys Scouts of America as well. He recently led the organization in dedicating a house for the Martin family. Tosbia Martin is the mother of two sets of twins. She, along with her family and friends, dedicated hundreds of hours working on the new home.

Of the experience, Martin says, “having the privilege of becoming a Habitat for Humanity homeowner is truly a blessing to me and my family. We finally have our own space. My children will finally be able to decorate their own room and be able to play in their own yard. We couldn't have done it without Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb.”

Tickets for the event cost $50 and are available for purchase at the Habitat for Hamanity-DeKalb office or by phone at 770.270.6813. More information about Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb can be found on its website. More information about Habitat for Humanity International can be found online.
