Question of the Day: Is Chase Bank a Good Replacement of Hastings?

Chase is requesting a new zoning variance.

Chase Bank has requested three variances from DeKalb County to build a new branch on the site of the former Hastings garden and nature store.

closed its doors to relocate its business to Peachtree Corners in August 2011 following its announcement that it developed a new and unique retail concept that required new additional space.

Since then, many businesses have scouted the site -  among those were Chase Bank.

Brookhaven community leaders and LCI proponents are concerned that the recessed building Chase is requesting along with some other requests goes against the LCI in maintaining a walkable community and has created an online petition to fight it.

Not another bank! I always thought the Hastings location could easily be converted to a restaurant with bistro tables scattered under lights in yard with the streams.....yeah...I am not in the restaurant business. LOL I would much prefer some othr choice of tenant.

The only thing worse than another bank in that location would be another tire store.

No, not ANOTHER bank. For goodness sake, who even goes to a bank anymore for anything other than to use the ATM? No, the space should be use for something that enhances the community. With that new development near Oglethorpe and all of the roads that come together in that spot....... city leaders need to be smart and use the vacant space to enhance the neighborhood - not as yet one more way for a big out of state wall street bank to come in and take money out of the community.

I think a bank is a risky tenant! Remember the number of bank failures in Georgia? The Chase argument is that respecting the Brookhaven Overlay is more appropriate if you own the property as opposed to lease it... hunh???... so Chase is a bank, buy the property & adhere to the zoning or move elsewhere. Actually, its OK with me if you don't have a branch here at all.

When will all of us remember that the Brookhaven LCI was created at considerable financial cost, considerable time, and considerable ratification by Dekalb County?? This Livable Centers Initiative was created to be enforced, not glossed over at the considerable expense of all concerned. We need to act accordingly!!--Tom Reilly
