Home Prices Down... Again

AJC data indicates Tucker had DeKalb's largest decline in median sale price last year.

If you read the AJC on Sundays, you may have already looked at the home sales piece they ran in the latest paper. The article and accompanying charts list median sales prices and number of properties sold last year, breaking the numbers down by zip code in the nine-county metro area. Overall, the region experienced a nearly 15 percent drop in median sale price.

I didn't have to search long for my zip code because it was highlighted (in the print edition) along with the other "worst" zip codes. That's right: Tucker—30084—had the largest decline in median sale price in DeKalb last year.

It certainly didn't ruin my lazy Sunday, but seeing that median prices had dropped nearly 30 percent in Tucker did realign my mood more closely with the drizzly day. And this drop is but another blow to values in a battered market; median prices are down 47.4 percent since 2007 in the 30084 zip code.

The good news, I guess, is that sales volume was up in many places. In 30084, the number of sales increased by 27 percent last year, second-most in DeKalb. Perhaps the clouds are finally lifting.

By now, I've grown accustomed to the fact that my home's value is dead in the water. Still, one hates to be reminded of it in black and white. How do others feel about seeing their zip code in the newspaper, under the heading "worst"?
